“The uglier a man’s legs are, the better he plays golf.”

For those who may be unfamiliar with golf, it can be hard to figure out how English science fiction writer H. G. Wells came up with such a scornful analogy of this precision club-and-ball sport and man’s lower appendages. It apparently sounds like an inside joke amongst hardcore golf enthusiasts, but whether this may be true or not, it still does not lessen the immense appeal of what we have mostly stereotypically considered as the mythical “rich man’s sport”.

The beginnings of golf remain unclear up to this day. Yet, it remains to be a pretty popular sport globally, with championships being held in places all over Europe, the United States, Japan and parts of Asia. All a golf player has to do is traipse over to a golf course and try to hit and sink the ball—employing clubs of different lengths—into a hole, in as few strokes as possible. Sounds easy? Well it probably isn’t.

Golf requires a great deal of dedication. It calls for immense discipline. A golfer is considered a sportsman who bears great meticulousness and wit. And no—contrary to what most people believe—the game of golf is not a game of and for the lazy. As a matter of fact, the sharpness and speed of one’s body coordination and mind compensates for the lack of physical activity. It is quite an entertaining game when one gets used to it, flying balls and sharps arm swings and all.

Amidst the blue and green of golf courses lie holes which are intricately placed with correspondingly marked teeing areas. Most golf courses have 18 holes, but there are those that have only 9, where golfers are entitled to go through them twice.

Ideally, a golfer officially begins the game during what is known as the “golf tee time

Golf Tee Times

Golf Tee Times

”. This is a specific, pre-set time of the day when a golfer kicks off his round, which may take an allotment of about seven to fifteen minutes depending on the pace. This arrangement itself shows a test of character for a golfer: for instance, when one golfer is scheduled to tee off at 10:00 AM, he is expected to be there at least five minutes before the arranged time, as tardiness in the tee box automatically calls for disqualification. Golf tee time takes place on the teeing ground, a specific spot within the course which measures, in depth, about two club lengths.

Although several golf courses require appointments to be made for tee times, there are a few that do not. It is ideal for individuals or groups to make requests to schedule tee times at least a week in advance, prior to the desired date. This would ensure that players would no longer have to wait hours before getting the game on, especially if playing at popular golf courses. Reservation fees may cost 2 to 5 US dollars—not such a bad price for a fun round of golf. A player may cancel the reservation at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled day, to avoid late fees
